Pakistani pop singer Annie Khalid is launching her career in the UK in style this autumn with the release of her first single on AK RecordsBoom Boom Danze, featuring the Grammy Award Winning Beenie Man and the broadcast of BBC Three Documentary Annie Khalid. . . A Woman’s World, in which she talks to successful Muslim women looking to break down misconceptions.

Noor–ul–Ain, but popularly known as Annie or Annie Khalid, was born 27thMarch 1987 in Lahore, Punjab Pakistan. Her parents moved to England when she was six months old where she grew up in East London attending the Plashet Girls School before later moving to Essex with her parents.

At Plashet Girl’s School Annie’s teachers warned her to be careful of her footsteps “because there were lots of girls who would follow her”. Growing up in a very multicultural town, Annie was part of the East London Dance Company and enrolled in dance workshops during her half term vacations.

Sitting bored at home in late 2005, Annie started humming a melody that she sang to a friend who introduced her to a music arranger. Together they came up with a simple, yet catchy song that Annie called Mahiya. She was then encouraged by family and friends to take it a step further – a record company got in touch and preparations for a video followed. After shooting the video with the help of her father, Annie released the song in Pakistan, having no idea what was in store for her. With her simple style of singing and catchy lyrics, the song became an instant hit. It then started getting ripped from the video to be sold separately. Mahiya went on to become the most accessed Pakistani pop song on the Internet during 2005 and 2006.

Next up, Bollywood cinema moguls Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt asked to use Mahiya in their upcoming movie Awarapan. Annie flew to India to re-record the song and make a new video before the release of the movie and consequently gained more fame and a burgeoning fanbase. After the success of Mahiya, Annie started working with various charities, raising awareness for education and health.

Annie went on to win the Most Wanted Song 2006 Viewers Choice award at TMA Pakistan, plus the Most Wanted Female for 2006 and 2008, The Pride Of Performance from the 14th August Committee, Oslo, Norway and many more awards as her career progressed.

Annie soon became a household name and endorsed various high profile brands, which included her being “The Face” of Pepsi Pakistan, before going on to become the most popular female artist in Pakistan to date. The name Annie Khalid is now synonymous with success for any music event in Pakistan and she was the showstopper at the L’Oreal Karachi Fashion Week in 2010 for fashion house BNS Couture. Following on from this success, Pepsi then teamed Annie up with Indian singing legend Adnan Sami Khan for later campaigns.

In late 2008 Norwegian Telecommunication Company Telenor signed Annie as their new brand ambassador. Telenor’s light-hearted approach worked well for Annie’s and projected both artist and brand to new heights. Fans appreciated the new look and enjoyed the funny commercials, changing Annie’s tag name from the Mahiya girl to the Talkshawk girl.

On 23rd September 2010, Annie was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for theNorwegian Red Cross and through her activities with the Red Cross raised money for the flood victims of Pakistan. Then on 25th November Annie released her UK debut single “Be My Baby” which featured a remix by Judge Jules and from which all proceeds were donated to the flood victims. Being a global artist she feels she can work for various causes and bridge gaps between communities. For her work in this area Annie received an honour from the Red Cross Secretary GeneralBorge Brende, which gave her the opportunity to represent Pakistan on an international level.

In June 2011, Annie launched her café, AK Lounge in Lahore, Pakistan. She left no stone unturned to make it one of a kind and stand out among the other cafes in town. The AK Lounge is located in one of the more popular areas of Lahore and was an instant hit amongst the young, continuing to grow with the star herself. At the same time as the café launch, Annie became the first South Asian celebrity to be featured in UK fashion and celebrity magazine LOOK.

In August 2011, Annie signed a contract with Norwegian telecommunication company Lebara for her to appear in their promotions campaign and so Annie became the first Pakistani artist to endorse a brand internationally. Besides newspapers and billboards, she could be seen on every bus, tube, train and station throughout Norway and Annie Khalid continues with her work to put Pakistan on the International scene. Annie was also selected to be the face of Toni & Guy Pakistan in August 2011 and currently appears on all Toni & Guycampaigns throughout Pakistan. She also collaborated with British/Norwegian boy band A1 on their single Just 3 Words, which they unveiled during a live performance at London’s O2 ‘Dome’ Arena.

Since 2011 Annie has got married, but unfortunately this did not work out and she is now solely concentrating on recording new music for a massive worldwide push in 2013/14. The first single released on AK Records is Boom Boom Danze, which features Grammy Award Winning artist Beenie Man. Alongside the release of this track in late September/October 2013, Annie is making Annie Khalid . . . A Woman’s World, BBC Three documentary in which Annie talks to successful Muslim women looking to break down misconceptions.
